Starting ICDL, Training & Courseware

Starting ICDL

When candidates register to start the ICDL certification process they purchase an ICDL Candidate Registration Number. This is a unique number that is used for all ICDL tests (ICDL Start, ICDL Workforce, ICDL Tech and ICDL Professional).

ICDL Candidate Registration Numbers are purchased from any ICDL Accredited Test Centre. The cost of the ICDL Candidate Registration number includes ONE certificate issued by ICDL Malta. Only an ICDL Accredited Test Centre can carry out testing and issue ICDL Candidate Registration Numbers. Test Centres are approved and monitored by ICDL Malta.

One-Module ICDL Registration Number
New ICDL candidates interested in getting certified in any ONE module rather than the full certification (ICDL Start, ICDL Workforce, ICDL Tech or ICDL Professional certificate) can purchase the one-module ICDL Registration Number.

The cost of the one-module ICDL Registration number is less than the ICDL Registration number (MTRN#######) used when sitting for multiple ICDL tests. New ICDL candidates who are interested in getting certified in ONE ICDL module can therefore benefit from a cost-effective registration.

The one-module ICDL Registration number has this format MTRX#######.

The cost of the MTRX registration number includes the issue of one printed certificate listing the one module.

If at a later stage the candidate decides to undertake tests for other ICDL modules, the MTRX Registration Number will be replaced by the standard MTRN Registration Number by paying the difference due.

Training

ICDL training is delivered through a variety of media, including traditional classroom based, instructor-led methods, and self-directed, assignment or multimedia based training, which is usually a home study option. This latter method has proved to be most successful when learners are supported by a tutor or mentor to help with any queries.

If you believe that you already have appropriate IT skills and are sufficiently experienced in the relevant ICDL module/s, you may not need to follow a course. However, before you decide that you do not require any training, it is strongly recommended that you:

  1. review the syllabi of the ICDL modules,
  2. review the official ICDL courseware and
  3. you work through the ICDL diagnostic (mock) tests.

If you do not obtain 80%+ in the ICDL diagnostic test, then you should consider following a course at one of the ICDL Accredited Test Centres.

Note that when you register at ICDL Accredited Test Centre to start the ICDL programme you will be provided with:

  1. the ICDL Registration Number,
  2. official ICDL courseware and
  3. one diagnostic (mock) assessment test for each ICDL certification test purchased°

°You will be provided with instructions to do the diagnostic assessment test from home. The ICDL certification test is always done at the ICDL Accredited Test Centre.

There shall be no charge for the diagnostic assessment test and the official ICDL courseware. An appropriate fee may however be charged by the Test Centre to recover the costs associated with the provision of printed or electronic versions of the courseware.

Courseware

Candidates purchasing certification test/s from an ICDL Accredited Test Centre will be provided with official ICDL Foundation courseware for the relevant module test/s purchased. There shall be no charge for this courseware. An appropriate fee may however be charged by the Test Centre to recover the costs associated with the provision of printed or electronic versions of the courseware.

There are other approved ICDL courseware providers who produce materials for teaching and learning the knowledge and skills prescribed in the ICDL syllabus. Skillsbox is an approved courseware provider for Malta.

Skillsbox allows candidates to access learning materials from anywhere and study at their own pace. Skillsbox eLearning content incorporates state-of-the-art functionality to enhance the learner experience, including video, animation and interactive activities. In addition, Skillsbox In-Application Technology enables the candidates to practice their skills in the desktop application, while they learn.

The Skillsbox content team work closely with ICDL Foundation, which means that as soon as a new ICDL module is released or new software version becomes available, work commences on developing and publishing the associated Skillsbox learning content and automated test, thus ensuring that Skillsbox has the most up-to-date ICDL Modules available on the market.
